Doug — Founder, Ads That Make Sense
Founder · Ads That Make Sense

Doug Former wedding photographer.
Business owner. Anti-guru. Dad.

I built this so other business owners don't have to learn ads the way I did — the hard way, the expensive way, and mostly alone.

You know that feeling where you're doing everything right — working hard, delivering great work, asking happy clients to tell their friends — and somehow it's still not enough to actually build something? I lived that for over a decade. This is the story of how I got out of it.

Doug — Wedding Photography
15 years. 500+ luxury weddings. A business built on skill — and the constant hope that word of mouth would be enough.
Where It Started

I did everything they told me to do. For thirteen years.

I posted consistently. I built our portfolio. Asked happy clients to refer their friends. Showed up. Stayed patient. Word of mouth will come they said.

That's what every photographer in my circle said. That's what the coaches said. That's what the Facebook groups said. And for thirteen years, I believed them and did exactly that.

We barely stayed busy enough to keep the lights on. But "busy enough to survive" isn't the same as building something. We never got close to profitable. We never got close to ahead. We were working constantly and still not getting anywhere that felt like progress.

I wasn't looking for a shortcut. I just wanted a way to stop waiting for customers to find me and start putting myself in front of them.

The Turn

I stopped waiting. I started showing up where my customers already were.

When I discovered Meta ads, the thing that clicked for me wasn't a tactic. It was a mindset shift. Instead of hoping the right person would stumble across my work — I could put my work in front of exactly the person I wanted to work with.

That was it. That was the whole thing. No magic. No secret formula. Just the ability to stop waiting and start choosing.

But getting there wasn't clean. I bought the courses. I followed the "ad experts." I spent money I didn't have, went into debt on systems that left me more confused — and with fewer results — than when I started. I wasted real time before I started ignoring the noise and testing things myself.

What I eventually figured out was embarrassingly simple. The right objective. The right audience. Copy that speaks to one person. A pixel that actually fires. Budget that makes sense. That's the whole thing. I built a repeatable setup that brought in clients — and I've been refining it ever since.

"I wasn't building a business just to work more. I was building it so my family could actually feel the difference."
The Real Why

Here's the honest truth: I wasn't doing any of this because I loved marketing. I was doing it because I have a family to take care of and working 70-hour weeks just to get by wasn't good enough for them.

My wife Ashley and I built this together. Not literally — she didn't sit down and learn Ads with me — but every frustrating hour I put into figuring this out was for us. For a life that wasn't just surviving the month.

If you're reading this and you're a business owner who started your business because you wanted more for your family — not just more work, more stress, and more bills — I get it. You're exactly who I built this for.

Because getting your ads right isn't about being a marketer. It's about making sure the work you're already doing actually leads somewhere worth going.

Why I Built This

I spent too much time and money learning this the hard way.
I'm not going to let you do the same.

Ads That Make Sense exists because I wasted real money and real time before I found what actually worked. Every dollar I wasted, every confusing course I bought, every "strategy" that left me more frustrated than when I started — that's money and time real business owners shouldn't have to lose.

Everything I build is on purpose. Written in plain English on purpose. Designed to make you less dependent on me — not more — on purpose. Because the goal was never to build a business where people needed me forever. The goal was to help real business owners get their ads working so they could go run their businesses.

Plain English always If a mechanic in Tulsa would have to Google a term, I rewrite it. No jargon, no marketing-speak, no exceptions.
Accessible pricing on purpose Investment creates skin in the game. But expensive doesn't mean better. The $11 module works because the content works, not because of the price tag.
No dependency I want you to understand your own ads. Every product I build is designed to make you more capable, not more reliant on me.
